CHAPTER 39

Calum yawned. Hanging out with a bunch of couples and not getting any action for himself on a regular basis was not what he imagined his grade 12 year would be like. The only thing keeping him from tearing out his hair was thinking there might be a golden crest waiting for him somewhere on campus. He didn’t want to admit it to anyone but he loved the idea of a real live treasure hunt.

November was almost over already. His great-uncle’s assistant had agreed to send Calum a copy of Lakeview’s original school map nearly three weeks ago. The Canadian postal system was notoriously bad. It seemed they worked as slowly as possible or else were on strike. He would check his mailbox down at the student union again in the morning. The copies had to be here soon. Calum was eager to start looking. The search made him feel like a kid again, and he liked it.

Duncan racked up the balls on the oak pool table sitting in the middle of the Burns House common room. Calum could use a good game of pool. Smacking balls across a table always helped him sort out his head. Some of the other guys in the House were watching horror flicks in the TV room. Calum didn’t feel like looking at anything that would remind him of Griffin sticking his tongue down Leigh’s throat on Halloween. What the hell was wrong with a good action movie anyway?

Did Leigh even realize how many guys found her attractive? Yesterday, he overheard Brad asking David if anyone had asked her to Winterfest yet.

Winterfest was their big all-school Christmas formal. The boys started asking their dates as early as November 10. An all-school competition unofficially started on the fifteenth. The guy who had asked his date to the dance in the most creative way won dinner for two at one of the local restaurants. Calum couldn’t believe what some guys ended up doing for a free meal.

Calum grabbed a pool cue from the wall rack and chalked the tip.

“Dude, what’s up? Someone piss in your Cheerios?”

“Fuck you, Duncan.”

“Seriously, dude, you’re wound so tight you look like you’re going to blow a gasket.”

Calum rolled his neck from side to side before lining up his shot. The solid-yellow nine ball sank into the side pocket. “I just need to get some, if you know what I mean.”

Duncan laughed. “Who are you asking to the dance?”

“No one, yet.”

“The good ones are going fast. Want me to ask Abby who’s left in her house?”

“I can find my own date, thanks.” The fact that all of his recent hookups had bombed seemed a bit more concerning than finding a date for the dance.

“Chill, man, that’s not what I meant and you know it. I was just offering to help you narrow the field.” Calum shot again and missed. “You want to join us for dinner beforehand? We’re taking the girls down to the Cider Press.”

The Cider Press was the nicest restaurant in the valley.
